Stem Cells Parkinson's Disease

Do you, like some people do, believe that stem cells are the end of be all of pretty much everything? Or... are you one of those persons who - which I can completely understand - think using embryos, by destroying them, is a "sin"? Most likely, I would say, you are somewhere inbetween. Perhaps you do have those very polarized opinions, but you probably also on some level, and to some degree, understand those who go against you. Or, you understand why they would use it/would not use it - but at the same time, your own opinion is strong enough for you to still decide for/not for stem cells.

Anyway... enough rambling. Stem cells parkinson's disease... can stem cells be used to cure it? Let's have a look. In the University of Minnesota they are researching on how to treat Parkinson's disease using some new methods. Of course, one of those includes the use of stem cells. This disease, which affects million of people yearly, actually often is nothing more than a little shaky feet -- in the beginning. However, as you might have seen in the case of actor Michael J Fox this quickly gets worse (which was the case for him; who had to quit the awesome tv series Spin City because of it).

I might have to explain a little more what actually causes Parkinson's first. What triggers it is a lack of certain brain cells. These brain cells are those that produce dopamine - which is a neurotransmitter. Because the nerves are not working as they should, your arms aren't working as they should. Get it?

What these researchers have tried to do, in order to cure the disease, is transplant - into the places in the brain that are in need of dopamine - some stem cells.

Actually, using this on humans is miles away, at this point. How come? Actually, it's hard to know exactly where the Parkinson begins - so it would be a real risk taking to start testing it on humans (which, of course, isn't something that "you" usually do with a new treatment; instead you try it on mice).

I hope that this little venture into stem cells parkinson's disease has shed some light on this for you. Possibly you have become more interested and want to check out stem cells parkinson's disease more because of it. In either case, thank you for reading.
